UK and Chile sign mutual recognition agreement

The UK and Chile signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement of Higher Education Qualifications on Friday 13 May 2016, with Jo Johnson signing the treaty on behalf of the UK Government at a ceremony in London (pictured).

The treaty sets out a framework for comparable levels of the respective higher education systems and provides details of the recognition process for holders of degrees from the other country.

The treaty is significant because it facilitates much more rapid labour and student mobility between the two countries, which in turn boosts export opportunities for UK universities and greatly improves the opportunities for UK professionals to work in Chile.

UK NARIC played the lead role in the development of the technical content for the treaty. In this role, UK NARIC have liaised with a range of HE stakeholders and regulatory authorities to ensure the treaty commitments are fit for purpose and do not contravene other legislation, whilst also ensuring that the broadest possible range of UK higher education awards are covered by the treaty.

The development process has taken 4 years since the first technical workshop. The bilateral agreement has a wider importance as it is now operating as a model for mutual recognition arrangements with other countries in the region.
