The CHARONA Project is an unprecedented comprehensive and critical analysis of the role and work of national recognition information centres (NARICs) since the inception of the ENIC-NARIC Networks.

The last fifteen years have seen extensive reforms and development in the European sphere of education, including

• the Bologna Process
• the Copenhagen Process
• the introduction of recognition tools
• the referencing of national qualification frameworks to the European Qualifications Framework (EQF)
• the European Directive 2005/36/EC.

In responding, and often contributing, to these developments, the role and work of NARICs has changed and must continue to do so. Through in-depth research and focussed consultation with recognition centres of the ENIC-NARIC Networks, this study investigates the ways in and extent to which the role of NARICs has changed. The final report presents this research, highlighting the impact of various policy initiatives on the scope and remit of NARICs' work and accordingly providing recommendations on how to move forward to ensure and enhance the quality and effectiveness of the Network.

A follow up project, The Changing Role of NARICs: Stakeholder Perspectives, has recently been commissioned to examine how well the work of NARICs is meeting stakeholder needs. More updates will be available in future months.
